As I mentioned in yesterday's post, we visited the home where William Shakespeare was born, grew up and lived with his wife Anne Hathaway for the first 5 years of his marriage. Here are more photos from the mid 16th century home. For more about house, click here.

It is believed that William was born in the front bedroom on the second floor of the house (where the bust sits).

As space ran out, some names were written over including Lord Alfred Tennyson. People also wrote on the walls and ceilings until they finally started using a guest book in the 1860's. Many of the names have been painted over.
rope bed |
The origin of the phrase "sleep tight" came from days when beds were made of ropes on frames that supported a mattress of sorts. The wooden stick on frame was turned in order to tighten the ropes just before retiring for the night. If the ropes started to sag, the bed would become very uncomfortable. Hence the phrase "good night, sleep tight."
