Shipbound in Salvador

(I wrote this post yesterday while confined to our room but before symptoms set in. However, the ship internet was down so I couldn't post. I added a few more pictures and hopefully it will post today, March 8.)

Even though we're confined to our room, we do have a balcony and there is much going on in this busy port. The Insignia is currently anchored in All Saints Bay in Salvador in Bahia, Brazil, and our room is located on the starboard side of the ship. Our view is gorgeous blue water and all different types of boats coming and going, along with the old São Marcelo Fort.

Built in 1608, Sao Marcelo Fort is located on a small bit of land off the coast and is one of two forts separated by water from land in Brazil. It is the only cylindrical fort in Brazil. It is sometimes called "Forte do Mar" (Fort of the Sea). Looking down at All Saints Bay from above, it has been called “Bahia’s navel” because of its circular shape.

I was able to google to get a bit more information about the fort. It was constructed entirely of wood "with 19 artillery pieces of various calibers". It became a primary target of the Dutch in 1624 who used it as a base to fire on and capture the city of Salvador.

It was reconstructed in 1650 and again in 1728. It served as a political prison in the 19th century. It is recognized by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage but has been closed to the public since 2011. In the past it has housed museums, restaurants and souvenir shops. Currently it is home to some beautiful palm trees.

Our view will change tomorrow as we sail to Maceio.

  1. Bharberts: It looks lovely to watch all the activity out in the Bay Area. So sorry you have COVID and hope it is the 5 day variety. Perhaps clean sea air will be good medicine. Praying for quick recoveries.
