It's hard to explain the bureaucracy involved when coming to live in Indonesia. If you're just coming as a tourist, perhaps all of this would not be necessary. But if you're going to establish residency, do research or travel, all the necessary requirements are very time consuming, expensive and frustrating. Involved were many visits to the police station and Immigration office, first in Jakarta and later in Bandung.
In all, Ronnie will have been to the Immigration office in Bandung 7 times for the kitas, (apply, go back with letter, return to pay, go back for fingerprints and photographs, return to pick up the kitas (which had to be turned in with multiple entry/exit permit), go back to pay the fee and then back again to pick them up. Every office is separate and apparently there is no file sharing. Each trip requires hours of waiting. We will be sooo happy to have all this paper work completed. We also had to have the electronic fingerprinting, along with the old fashioned kind with ink. Mugshots too. We're beginning to feel like criminals!
