3 sea days

This is our 3rd day at sea due to heavy fog and poor weather conditions. Unfortunately, after leaving port in Nuuk where we experienced beautiful weather, the decision was made to skip our next 2 ports – Paamiut (Frederikshab) and Qaqortoq, Greenland (try pronouncing those). We’ve discovered that itinerary changes are quite common on these long cruises – sometimes because of social unrest in certain areas of the world, and other times due to unfavorable weather. In this case, the decision was made because of huge floating icebergs and extreme heavy fog.

Three days ago, while the sun was shining with a pleasant 60 degrees, I snapped this video and these photos as we sailed away from Nuuk, Greenland. Since then, we've been at sea with constant night and day fog.

goodbye Nuuk, Greenland

As with airline travel, a cruise ships motto is always "safety first" and while itinerary changes are disappointing, they are appreciated as well. If you saw the movie "Titanic" you can appreciate the captain's decision not to venture into what may be treacherous waters. Who can forget Kate Winslet and Leonaro DeCaprio in the ocean clinging to floating debris as the Titanic went down?!

So we settle in for 3 days at sea, the fog horn blowing regularly both night and day. We feel very safe, while at the same time a bit disappointed that we won't be visiting these places on our planned itinerary.

However, when you see what the weather looks like, you'll understand why that decision was made. Sometimes we can't see the ocean at all - only fog.

With the extra time onboard, Ronnie has spent a lot of time working on his screen play. He's also managed to exercise daily. I've caught up on my sleep, read one book and started on another. I even walked on the treadmill this morning!

Tonight as I write this, we have just returned from dinner in our favorite onboard restaurant with a couple from Washington state that we met on our World Cruise last year. Our table was near the water and during our meal we spotted a whale breaching.

Now we are headed to Reykjavik, Iceland where we will spend the next 2 days. As I've mentioned a number of times already, our internet is on and off (mostly off) but tomorrow we'll be in port and we can use our T-Mobile phone service to help with communication.

Thanks for following along. I love hearing from you! If it takes a few days to reply, at least you'll understand why.

  1. Barb: I'm thankful you and Ronnie didn't have to jump off the ship into THAT water and fog!! Is it a cold misty fog that makes everything damp? Greenland maybe should be called GrayLand this year. Enjoy Iceland! We'll be looking for photos of our adventurer s with the volcano!

    1. Barbara, we absolutely have had the best weather (fog, yes) but not too cold - if we're tempted to complain we just think about how hot it is at home and it feels really good. ha! Bummer that we missed the other 2 stops but Iceland has more than made up for it! However, ship internet has been worse than horrible (so frustrating) so I haven't been able to post new blogs or reply to comments until now. We leave Reykjavik in 45 minutes so I'm trying to make use of it while I can (using my T Mobile phone hotspot). The weird thing is that the ship service will let me open FaceBook occasionally, but not my mail or blog. Argh@!#!$!
