A Walk on the Calm Side

15 minutes from our front door......Ahhh....

THIS is why the Cotswolds is a wonderful place to visit. Today we spent some time walking outside the village. Ronnie has already explored a lot of back roads on his bike and he was anxious for me to see more of the area around Stow.

Stow on the Wold is the highest point in the Cotswolds. Everything is literally downhill from here. Of course that always means an uphill climb to get back. :) But it is totally worth it to see and experience the peacefulness of the countryside. Literally, the only sound we heard until we got close to town was the sound of an occasional dove.

1/2 mile from Stow - the tiny village of Maugersbury

baaahhhh! (what, no sheep treats?)

We headed toward the small farming village of Maugersbury (only .5 mile down the hill) and then turned down a single lane road, passing farms and a few houses, one with honey and preserves for sale. Next time I'll take money so I can buy some. I stopped to photograph some black sheep who were grazing in a pasture. They saw me and came over like they thought I had a treat for them. Disappointed but not giving up, they ran along the stone wall to make sure I wasn't changing my mind until I was almost out of their sight.

next time....

Further on we noticed a trail leading into the woods and decided to take it back towards the village. Our walk in the woods was beautiful! Everything was green and lush and unspoiled. The trail was soft from layers of fallen leaves and debris. It was cool and completely silent as we continued walking until we finally lost our trail. Ronnie spotted another opening and we walked toward it until we came up on the edge of a huge wheat field, which appeared ready for harvest. We walked along its edge until we were almost back to town, then found our way back over to the main road and climbed over a broken area in the stone wall.

one word - pastoral

Our final stop was at the village cemetery before heading back to the Old School House. I'll save those photos for another day. I can't wait for another walk - so beautiful and so many photo ops waiting for me!
