A change of plans...

We were scheduled for a stop on Devil's Island, France's infamous penal colony this morning. The island chain lies 10 miles off the coast of mainland French Guiana. However, the seas were pretty rocky last night and the weather was not cooperating this morning so the captain made the call to forgo our planned stop. Actually, I was not disappointed about it because I had already decided over breakfast that I wasn't interested in tendering over to the island through choppy waters. The windows on the tenders are always open, and having just washed and dried my hair I wasn't really interested in a bumpy, windy, damp ride over to an island which is still surrounded by sharks.

We saw Devil's Island from a distance as we sailed by, but because it was raining I didn't even try to get any photos. The island was officially shut down in 1953 and is basically now just a historical site.

So today was another full day at sea as we continue on toward Belem. Ronnie attended the talk on Devil's Island a couple of days ago but I didn't go, so I watched the video of it on our room television. It's nice that all the talks get recorded so we can watch anything we missed. The photos of the decaying prison that the speaker showed reveal a bit of what those prisoners lives were like there. I think getting eaten by a shark might have been a better way to die!

Some really nice things about this afternoon.

*A long nap - I dreamed I was getting a fluffy black kitten and I also dreamed that I was carrying a handgun through the mall which accidentally went off and shot the floor. I was hopeful no one heard it (ha!) but the police had shown up to question me by the time I got outside. That's when I woke up so I don't know how the story ended.

*A lady we met from our previous World Cruise called and asked if I would come down to their room. She had some clothes laid out that she thought might fit me. I was able to find a blouse and some black slacks that I can wear to the Oceania Event in Rio on the 23rd if I don't get a chance to buy anything between now and then. She even had shoes that I can wear, which borders on miraculous since I have trouble finding shoes in my own closet that are comfortable!

*Allowing for the 3 hour time difference, my BSF zoom fellowship was this evening 6 pm - about when we would have gone to dinner. I never order canapes because they are delivered between 4-6 pm and that would ruin our appetites for dinner. But I had the idea that if I could just order canapes, that could be my dinner and I would be free to "attend" the zoom meeting.

I looked at the canape menu and decided I would order veggie spring rolls with chocolate covered strawberries for dessert. So I dialed up our butler and asked if it was too late to order from the canape menu for tonight. Sure enough, they needed to have been ordered by 12 pm. I thanked him anyway, and was about to hang up when he said "I have some vegetable spring rolls and chocolate covered strawberries if you could eat that?" He had no idea that was exactly what I would have ordered! I was happily nibbling away on veggie spring rolls 10 minutes later! Afterwards I was able to join my zoom meeting with no internet glitches at all.

  1. Barbara: I'm sorry you did not get to tour Devil's Island. I have watched so many old movies about it. I have heard the waters are always treacherous around there. Your friend was so nice to get you outfitted...and I cannot believe you found shoes either! What a kind lady she is! Have fun in Belem. I read all the Master and Commander books, so I know it has been used for centuries for restocking ships. I hope you get to make pictures!!

  2. Yes, we were told that there are still a lot of sharks around the island today! I wonder if sharks have a long memory?! I don't know the first think about Belem, but we do have an excursion there so hopefully I will know more this time tomorrow. You know I will take pictures! You amaze me with your knowledge!

Maybe you can wear your borrowed outfit from the kind lady and you & Ronnie can celebrate in a more formal restaurant!
